It seems like we wait for an eternity for the summer south swells to reach our shores, bringing with them warmer waters and swell lines to the horizon. Over the past few weeks we’ve been sampling a taste of So Cal’s sweet summer offerings, with the first south swells of the season showing up full force. Under the May grey I’ve managed to sneak out and capture the moments of wave hungry surfers. Just last week I found myself heading North of San Diego running away from closeouts and in search of sneaky corners. I found some great waves with awesome friends ……. here’s a few shots from my swell chasing adventures below.
This past weekend I was fortunate to be invited to join a badass group of Surf Moms -Escaping their kids and taking some time out of their daily grind to enjoy each others company, catch some waves and have a good laugh along the way. As always, camera in hand I was there to capture the best (and worst moments). Here’s some of my favorite images from the weekend for you to enjoy. If you’re looking at finding a rad bunch of women (moms and non moms) to go surfing and on adventures with, I recommend you take a little trip on over to www.sandiegosurfladies.com and sign yourself up! Here’s a couple of my fav photos from our weekend…..enjoy – Ashleigh
We’ve been super excited since our local street was newly paved last week and is the ultimate skate heaven for us girls. The afternoon waves were a little mixed up with a strong onshore – so we grabbed the boards and cruised Neptune to shoot the anticipated HerWaves ‘Rolling Single’ Tank. Get your new favorite tank now over at www.herwaves.com
One of the true perks of my work is meeting incredible people like Devon DeMint. She’s a Leucadia local, absolute shredder, skateboarder, inspirational writer and rad mom to two little beach bums. You’d be hard pushed to meet someone with as much stoke and bigger smile than this little lady – plus, she’s got talent to match. As one of my favorite surfers to photograph, I was stoked to head to Swamis a few days ago
Known as @mermaidsightings on instagram, Devon has a follow worthy page and wonderful website www.taleofamermaid.com. She’s also the driving force behind this incredible ladies skate group www.sheskateshere.com (@sheskateshere). If you don’t already, you should go and follow her RIGHT NOW! Keep your eyes peeled for this mermaid at her local spot – North Reef Beacons.
With the past couple months bringing less than exciting swell and keeping us photographers dodging rain showers, many emails have been appearing in my inbox asking for all kinds of ‘other’ photography. Usually I’ve got weeks of surf photo shoots scheduled in my diary, and am up to my eyeballs in edits for wave hungry surfers. This little bit of unusual downtime for me has been super exciting and allowed me to branch out from my daily norm and embark on exciting projects with incredible people.
I first met Jennipher founder of Her Waves through my surf photography not too long after I’d started out. I snapped a few pics of her surfing at Beacons and she’s always frequently turned up to shoots and collected some amazing shots of herself surfing. She approached me to help with photos for her awesome start up brand ‘Her Waves’ that she needed for her website, social media. I love new and exciting projects and especially with companies that rally resonate with my core values. It’s been so awesome to work with her on this fun project, and I’m excited for many more to come.
Many of you may have seen my recent model search post. I was totally overwhelmed with your support. Over 250 people reached out to help and I’ve been stoked to be able to include so many of you in some fun projects over the coming month – THANK YOU ALL!!!
So here’s a few pics from our shoot at Beacons last weekend. Rain threatened (as usual this winter) but somehow luck was on our side – the clouds parted, sun shone and even the surf turned on! Here’s a little peek of some of the shots from the session below – and don’t forget to check out www.herwaves.com for THE MOST AWESOME apparel for surf girls!

I have a wonderful group of surf amigas locally who I am fortunate to be able to surf with and take pictures of daily. A couple of months ago they had a little feature in Surf Girl magazine and I was stoked to be their photographer for a fun (if not slightly overcast) morning at Oceanside Harbor. So awesome to see my work in print and to have a 3 page spread in this incredible girls surf mag.
Im excited to be an official parter of San Diego Surf Ladies. That’s right amigas……you now get a smoking deal on surf photography sessions all year round. If you’re already a part of SDSL just log in on the website and check out all the awesome partner offers available to you, and be sure to check out http://www.sandiegosurfphotos.com for some examples of my work. Just drop me an email firstname.lastname@example.org or through my social media @sandiegosurfphotos and be sure to mention SDSL for your $50 discount when booking your photo session!
If you’re a female surfer in San Diego and you’re not yet a member of San Diego Surf Ladies, then what the hell are you waiting for….. Here’s a little bit about this awesome non profit organization and why you should join:
The San Diego Surf Ladies is an all women’s surf club founded February, 2004 by Jennifer (James) Simmonson to create a supportive surfing community for women surfers in the San Diego area. SDSL has provided many social surfing activities for its members including: a monthly Waikiki surf session geared for those that are relatively new to the sport, or prefer gentler waves, a monthly Shredders session which is geared for those that shortboard, a monthly Shaka session for all skill levels, annual Christmas, Anniversary and end of Summer parties, and all kinds of fun events in between. But SDSL members don’t just stay local. Members have traveled together to places like Baja, Mexico, Costa Rica, Australia, and Hawaii seeking great waves and sharing the stoke.
SDSL also provides unique opportunities for improving our skills and becoming better surfers. Sport sessions give members an opportunity to work on surfing skills in a supportive environment, through professionally coached surf sessions, core strength and fitness workout sessions, and video monitoring and analysis.
And finally, as members of a larger San Diego surfing community, SDSL values supporting and giving back by providing volunteer support through our adopted beach at Cardiff Reef, participating in the Boys to Men 100 Wave Challenge and other local community surfing events and beach clean-ups.
Some of San Diego Surf Ladies’ goals are:http://www.sandiegosurfladies.com/AboutUs
Create a positive community among San Diego female surfers
Learn from and support each other
Help protect coastal resources
Have informal surf sessions for fun
Organize social events, and plan mini-trips to Baja, OC, LA, or Ventura
Bring Pros and Industry people in to speak to our members
SDSL is a dynamic and diverse sisterhood, and encourages women of all ages and levels to develop surfing skills, have fun, and share the stoke. Join us for fun, community, and waves!
Be sure to visit www.sandiegosurfladies.com and I look forward to capturing your next session! – Ashleigh
There’s more rain in our forecast! I love the rain, especially since California is always in need of a good soaking. Rain in So Cal also has its downsides – crazy drivers, dirty pollutants and trash in the ocean and on the beaches and more potholes for me to navigate on my way to work (sigh)
There’s more rain in for forecast this week as we’re in another atmospheric river weather event right now. If you’ve not yet followed It’s been providing us with some drought relief and our mountains with stacks of snow over the past weeks and looks set to continue in the forecast for a little while longer. I really enjoy reading the report by Nathan Todd Cool over on the Swellwatch on Surfer – really interesting stuff. Take a look here for a rundown of the latest So Cal surf forecast https://forecasts.surfer.com https://forecasts.surfer.com
In anticipation of another solid few days of no surfing and no photos, I suited up and headed out for a morning session with some of my favorite girl crew. Some small waves at Grandview which were super fun. Condition stayed beautifully clean all morning and we were joined by a pod of playful dolphins.
Here’s to some sunnier days and more swell, and more photography sessions real soon – Ashleigh
It’s been a pretty wintery winter here in San Diego which has firmly put the brakes on a fair few days of surf photography. Instead of despairing at the dirty water, driving rain and blown out conditions I’ve taken some time to meet up and shoot with the awesome lady shredder behind an Encinitas emerging apparel company – Her Waves.
Femininity with an adventurous edge. Surf inspired clothing designed for women by women “http://www.herwaves.com
HER WAVES is a female run, female driven company that fusions together a love of surfing, skateboarding and community friendships – forget the butt shots, social stigmas and high end fashion that so often engulfs the world of women’s board sports . If you ‘love to hate’ major surf labels, struggle to find your niche when it comes to wardrobe choices and want something a little sassy and unique – look no further than HER WAVES. Their line of tees and tanks (coming soon) are printed on eco-conscious, luxuriously soft materials and come in a variety of beautiful designs and colors that will compliment every outfit in your closet. Working closely with other female artists, skaters, surfers and women who are passionate about their sport and lifestyle – I’m excited to see this awesome little company grow over the coming months.
As a photographer and small business owner I understand that high quality, professional images for your company (no matter how big or small) is at the heart of great branding and advertising for your product. I spent some time the past week with Jennifer from HER WAVES learning about her brand, her love of surfing/skateboarding and the passions that drive her company. She’s an incredible and talented visionary and I am super excited to work with her in creating content for her website and social pages!
