Surfgirl Magazine Feature

I have a wonderful group of surf amigas locally who I am fortunate to be able to surf with and take pictures of daily. A couple of months ago they had a little feature in Surf Girl magazine and I was stoked to be their photographer for a fun (if not slightly overcast) morning at Oceanside Harbor. So awesome to see my work in print and to have a 3 page spread in this incredible girls surf mag.

If you’re a female surfer in San Diego and you’re not yet a member of San Diego Surf Ladies, then what the hell are you waiting for….. Here’s a little bit about this awesome non profit organization and why you should join:

The San Diego Surf Ladies is an all women’s surf club founded February, 2004 by Jennifer (James) Simmonson to create a supportive surfing community for women surfers in the San Diego area. SDSL has provided many social surfing activities for its members including: a monthly Waikiki surf session geared for those that are relatively new to the sport, or prefer gentler waves, a monthly Shredders session which is geared for those that shortboard, a monthly Shaka session for all skill levels, annual Christmas, Anniversary and end of Summer parties, and all kinds of fun events in between. But SDSL members don’t just stay local. Members have traveled together to places like Baja, Mexico, Costa Rica, Australia, and Hawaii seeking great waves and sharing the stoke.

SDSL also provides unique opportunities for improving our skills and becoming better surfers. Sport sessions give members an opportunity to work on surfing skills in a supportive environment, through professionally coached surf sessions, core strength and fitness workout sessions, and video monitoring and analysis.
And finally, as members of a larger San Diego surfing community, SDSL values supporting and giving back by providing volunteer support through our adopted beach at Cardiff Reef, participating in the Boys to Men 100 Wave Challenge and other local community surfing events and beach clean-ups.

Some of San Diego Surf Ladies’ goals are:
Create a positive community among San Diego female surfers
Learn from and support each other
Help protect coastal resources
Have informal surf sessions for fun
Organize social events, and plan mini-trips to Baja, OC, LA, or Ventura
Bring Pros and Industry people in to speak to our members

SDSL is a dynamic and diverse sisterhood, and encourages women of all ages and levels to develop surfing skills, have fun, and share the stoke. Join us for fun, community, and waves!

Small waves and rainy days…

There’s more rain in our forecast! I love the rain, especially since California is always in need of a good soaking. Rain in So Cal also has its downsides – crazy drivers, dirty pollutants and trash in the ocean and on the beaches and more potholes for me to navigate on my way to work (sigh)

There’s more rain in for forecast this week as we’re in another atmospheric river weather event right now. If you’ve not yet followed It’s been providing us with some drought relief and our mountains with stacks of snow over the past weeks and looks set to continue in the forecast for a little while longer. I really enjoy reading the report by Nathan Todd Cool over on the Swellwatch on Surfer – really interesting stuff. Take a look here for a rundown of the latest So Cal surf forecast https://forecasts.surfer.com https://forecasts.surfer.com

In anticipation of another solid few days of no surfing and no photos, I suited up and headed out for a morning session with some of my favorite girl crew. Some small waves at Grandview which were super fun. Condition stayed beautifully clean all morning and we were joined by a pod of playful dolphins.

Here’s to some sunnier days and more swell, and more photography sessions real soon – Ashleigh

When it rains….you’ll find me rolling around Encinitas with HER WAVES – Surf inspired clothing designed for women by women.

It’s been a pretty wintery winter here in San Diego which has firmly put the brakes on a fair few days of surf photography. Instead of despairing at the dirty water, driving rain and blown out conditions I’ve taken some time to meet up and shoot with the awesome lady shredder behind an Encinitas emerging apparel company – Her Waves.

Femininity with an adventurous edge. Surf inspired clothing designed for women by women “

http://www.herwaves.com

HER WAVES is a female run, female driven company that fusions together a love of surfing, skateboarding and community friendships – forget the butt shots, social stigmas and high end fashion that so often engulfs the world of women’s board sports . If you ‘love to hate’ major surf labels, struggle to find your niche when it comes to wardrobe choices and want something a little sassy and unique – look no further than HER WAVES. Their line of tees and tanks (coming soon) are printed on eco-conscious, luxuriously soft materials and come in a variety of beautiful designs and colors that will compliment every outfit in your closet. Working closely with other female artists, skaters, surfers and women who are passionate about their sport and lifestyle – I’m excited to see this awesome little company grow over the coming months.

As a photographer and small business owner I understand that high quality, professional images for your company (no matter how big or small) is at the heart of great branding and advertising for your product. I spent some time the past week with Jennifer from HER WAVES learning about her brand, her love of surfing/skateboarding and the passions that drive her company. She’s an incredible and talented visionary and I am super excited to work with her in creating content for her website and social pages!

Go grab yourself an awesome tee over at www.herwaves.com and support your fellow female shredders! They post awesome and inspiring stuff over on their instagram account too @herwavesco
